The genre rewards construction over shock, which is why Polanski’s Chinatown, Reed’s The Third Man and Nolan’s Memento sit so high: their pleasures survive knowing the answer. Positions are set by a composite of IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and TMDb scores, Bayesian-adjusted so long-tested classics outrank a newer film until it has drawn a comparable body of votes.
